Backpacks

Top 10 things when you go backpacking

  • Use a waist pouch. They are very useful for keeping your money and important documents safe.
  • Ensure you keep a first aid kit in your backpack. Make sure it has everything from bandages and insect repellent to sunscreen.
  • Plastic and zip lock bags can be very useful. Keep a supply with you for food, dirty shoes and clothes.
  • Carry floating locks which you can use to secure your luggage especially if you plan to sleep on a bus or train or want to make sure your belongings stay safe.
  • Keep a bottle of clean water with you and make sure you refill it whenever you get the chance. You never know when you might be stuck without a water supply.
  • Try not to travel alone. Otherwise just stick to frequented areas.
  • Let a trustworthy person know of your plan. This will help to alert authorities if you don't arrive at your destination on time and let them know where you plan to be. It's difficult to be found if nobody knows where to look.
  • Keep your trip well planned. Spontaneity is great, but making sure you have a schedule that can be followed and that gives others an idea of your location will keep you safe.
  • Try to avoid looking like a tourist. Tourists are often the target for pickpockets and thieves. If you look like you know what you are doing, people will tend to leave you alone.
  • Don’t carry too much cash although you might not find ATMs everywhere you go. One of the main reasons being that you could be robbed, but also, there’s a possibility that you may just lose it. If possible, it’s best to have a couple of day’s money, kept in small denominations.

Beginner backpacking tips

  • Need for a luggage that is lightweight yet extremely durable.
  • Since backpacking is mostly walking, try to prepare for your trip by becoming a daily walker.
  • Some people also shoulder a pack the week or two before your trip so that your back and shoulder muscles get somewhat adjusted to the load.
  • Carry a topographic map of the area you will be hiking in, and don’t forget a compass.
  • Other essentials are suntan lotion and plenty of lightweight nylon rope. It comes in handy for securing your food or tying up a tarp over your tent or cooking area.
  • Keep an eye on your camera/films. If possible have some of your pictures developed as you go along, so that if your camera or films are lost or stolen you may not lose everything. If you have a digital camera, you may find some places where you can back your images up onto a disc and or perhaps e-mail to somewhere secure just in case you camera should be lost or stolen.
  • Batter your backpack. If your backpack looks as though it has been kicked round several times, would-be thieves are more likely to avoid it. They are bound to go for the brand-spanking new backpack which they think will contain lots of high value goodies for them.

World’s favourite backpacking destinations

  • BOLIVIA
  • Bolivia is popularly known as the Road of Death — a towering, narrow and dangerous road that passes through the mountains in the rainforest. The road leads to assorted Inca trails and ruins. Bolivia is abundantly blessed with gorgeous sights and you will quite literally be spoilt for choice here.
  • ICELAND
  • Reykjavik in Iceland is a popular destination, loved for its happening nightlife and party scene. Since the nights are longer coupled with freezing temperatures, tourists and locals have turned to dancing and drinking the night away.
  • AUSTRALIA
